How Great a Salvation
Pastor Ron Johnson
This morning, I'd like to focus our attention not toward the true King and His coronation that occurred on Palm Study, but instead upon our great salvation that the True King came to make possible.
This morning’s message will be more of a glance at a few of the components of our great salvation and we’ll take that glance through the lens of __________ ________.
* In case you’re interested, a few really helpful systematic theologies have written by Charles Ryrie, Wayne Grudem, Millard Erikson, Lewis Sperry Chafer etc.
When you finally get past the scary sounding name “systematic theology”, you’ll see his type of study is really all about answering: What does the ______ _______ say to us today about any given _______?
So a study in systematic theology is really all about searching God's Word to find all the verses related to a particular topic and then putting all those verses together so that we might prayerfully understand what God would have us believe.
In the Bible (in its BROADEST sense), salvation represents the _______ work of God by which he rescues man from the eternal ruin and doom of _____ and bestows on Him the riches of His _______, including eternal life now and eternal glory in heaven (Chafer/Walvoord 52 Major Bible Themes).
And when the Bible speaks of our salvation, I want you to understand that it speaks of it in ___ tenses so that all of the following statements are true of you today if you are in Christ. 1) I was saved 2) I am being saved and 3) I will be saved.
First, let’s take a look at the past tense of our salvation. In Ephesians 2, Paul explains in vv 4-5 and 8, But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. Again in v 8 ...for by grace you have been saved.
God's work in salvation so _________ to Him as the prophet Jonah said in 2:9 and is ____ _________ that any man or woman who has truly been _______ is always _______.
So now that we've looked at the PAST tense of our salvation and seen Scripture testifies that God's involvement in our salvation is so PERFECT that we are eternally secure, let's see what it says about the __________ tense of our salvation.
By the grace of God, He is presently involved in delivering us from the reigning power of sin in our lives and it’s a work He’s engaged in on a daily basis.
Consider Rom 6:12-14; 8:2; 2 Cor 3:18 and Phil 1:6.
Brothers and sisters at EVC, if you truly belong to Jesus, He's presently engaged in making you more like Christ. And this isn't something that happened all at once when you put your faith in Christ, this work of God in your life is ________ and happening in the ________ tense.
God’s children should find comfort in knowing that God always finishes what He starts!
If you're a child of God, He's not only saved you from the _________ of sin, but He's involved (right now) in saving you from the _________ of sin in your life until that future day when He'll save you from the very __________ of sin.
And that's the component of your salvation that's in the FUTURE tense.
Consider Rom 8:29, 13:11; 1 Pet 1:3-5 and 1 John 3:2.
According to the word of God, a day is still coming for believers when we will be conformed to the image of His Son and be like Him. Scripture also speaks of a salvation that will be fully revealed in the last time that is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
Prompts for Personal Reflection / Application
Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.
If you’re a child of God, how does it make you feel to know that God has not only saved you (past),
but that He’s still actively involved in saving you (present) until the day you will ultimately be saved (future)?
Do you believe the words of this children’s song to be true of you? If so, why or how?
He’s Still Working on Me
He's still working on me
to make me what I need to be
It took him just a week
to make the moon and stars
the sun and the earth
and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
He's still workin' on me.
