When MORE is Never Enough
Pastor Ron Johnson
Last week I told you that one of the greatest lies we can ever believe as it relates to our money is when we tell ourselves that we'll _______ more when we _______ more.
And one of the examples God has used to illustrate this is not true can be found in a parable in Luke 12:13-21.
In the immediate context surrounding The Parable of the Rich Fool, Jesus is talking A LOT about fear, anxiety and worry (v 4, 5, 6-7, 11, 22-23, 25 and 29).
Then in v 15, Jesus said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all ________________, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Now here's what I'm convinced Jesus wants us to recognize…When you and I are consumed by FEAR, WORRY & ANXIETY the temptation for us will be to believe the lie that temporal things, especially an abundance of them, will bring us the security, peace or comfort we need.
The Parable of the Rich Fool
16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not RICH TOWARD GOD.”
EVC family, If you desire to be rich toward God, you need to ___________ _________ _______________ (v 16).
Notice that God’s Word simply indicates the land produced plentifully (v 16).
Consider Matt 5:45 and Acts 14:17 He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous… God has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven & crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food & fills your hearts with joy.
God had been incredibly GOOD to the rich fool and he failed to recognize it!
If we’re ever going to be RICH toward God, we must RECOGNIZE GOD’s GOODNESS and ______________ ____________________ (vv 17-19a).
Sadly the rich fool could only talk and think about himself.
In this passage, he actually refers to himself (using the words I or my) approximately every 4 words in the English text. He thinks and reasons to himself and even speaks to his own soul as if it belonged to him!
Now it's easy for us to read this parable and think... what a FOOL... but does the way you're living your life today indicate your thoughts and how you manage your resources and money are more focused upon God or You?
If we truly desire to be rich toward God, we must not only RECOGNIZE GOD’S GOODNESS and REOUNCE SELF-CENTEREDNESS, but also _________ ________ _____________.
Sadly, the fool presumes he’ll live a long life, but God says in James 4:14-15 You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
And because he presumes he’ll live a long life… his motto is all about the hear and now. In short, it’s keep on resting, eat at once, drink your fill, keep on being merry!
But God interjects and emphatically states THIS NIGHT your soul is required of you. Quite literally, it is being __________ ________ from you (as if it were only on loan).
David declared in Psalm 39:6 “Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.”
Learn from the fool and know that GREED/COVETOUSNESS will not only keep you from being rich toward God, but is also improper for God’s holy people and idolatry (Eph 5:1-3 and Col 3:5).
Prompts for Personal Reflection / Application
Psalm 119:18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.
As funny as this comic is, don’t let it be you!
God help us to be RICH toward you, your church and your purposes RIGHT NOW as we give back freely and generously out of all you’ve given us.
