Not Loving the World
1 John 2:15-17
Pastor Ron Johnson
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
So John first gives the letter's recipients as well as you and I who are in Christ today a command and then 3 things follow that should motivate us to obey that command.
What’s the command?
When John speaks of not loving "the world" in this passage, he has in mind that God’s people are not to give their ultimate _________ or _________ to anything that stands in opposition to God, His Word and His people.
You see, according to Scripture, there is an invisible, spiritual, system that’s referred to at times in Scripture as “the world” and as you might expect, Satan rules over it.
Now that shouldn’t surprise you because we know whatever God is FOR, Satan is AGAINST! He's opposed to everything that God, His Word and His people stand for.
Read 2 Cor 4:4 where we see that Satan rules over “the world” John is referring to in this passage.
The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Now the good news is that even though the god of this world has a people and Kingdom, he's already lost the battle and those who are in Christ are already on the winning team.
However, John recognizes that as crazy as it may sound... the things that the world longs for and esteems can begin to look really attractive to God's people when they lose their focus and take their eyes off the One true King and His Kingdom.
There are so many ways you and I can be tempted to love the world and if we're not careful, our witness for Jesus and the work He's doing in our lives will be blocked.
John helps us to see that if you're continuously (as a pattern of your life) loving things that stand in opposition to God and usurp His throne in your life… It’s not possible to ALSO be continuously loving God!
If you're continuously (as a pattern of your life) loving things that stand in opposition to God and usurp His throne in your life, it’s not possible to _______ be continuously _________ God!
What are some of the common ways Pastor Ron mentioned we’re tempted to “love the world”?
What are some ways he didn’t mention that you might find yourself being tempted to “love the world”?
John actually identifies 3 things that should motivate us to NOT LOVE THE WORLD or the things in the world.
1) Loving the world or the things of the world actually __________ _______ _______ of his rightful place in our lives and ___________ Him.
2) Remember the world is _________ ________ along with its desires.
3) In strong contrast to the man or woman chasing after the world and its ways that are passing away, whoever ________ ______ _________ ____ ______ abides forever.
