Knowing and Believing the Truth
1 John 2:18-27
Pastor Ron Johnson
One of the VITAL SIGNS (or spiritual signs of life) that is present in those who know God and have eternal life is that they _______ ____ _________ _____ _______.
18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore, we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us. 20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. 21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also. 24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. 26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. 27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
So John refers (v 18) to an individual we know will play a prominent role in those days (the antichrist). And the first time he uses that word in this passage, he's referring to an literal and final worldly ruler who will be energized by Satan and stand in direct opposition to the true Christ. The Bible speaks of him in the books of Daniel, Matthew, 2 Thessalonians and Revelation.
And although the readers surely knew to expect THE antichrist would come, they may not have fully recognized now that many "antichrists" (not WILL come, but) HAVE come.
So John's focus has now clearly moved from the one individual who will one day stand in direct opposition to Christ to many who were opposed to or against him now and they demonstrated they were against Christ by teaching false doctrine that not only twisted, but ultimately distorted the truth of the Gospel and person and work of Christ.
Now let's consider some of the characteristics of these deceivers who had infiltrated the church, were directly opposed to Christ and were spreading false teaching.
They didn't ________ with the faithful, they ___________ from them (v 19).
These people ultimately demonstrated they were never part of the true church by abandoning true fellowship altogether and even leading people out with them.
According to John, true believers experience genuine fellowship around the Spirit-inspired, true, doctrine of the Apostles.
God's children (those who know Christ and have eternal life) KNOW and BELIEVE THE TRUTH and because they do, they_______ ___ ____________ with other believers who know and believe it as well.
The Bible teaches that TRUE saving faith endures to the end.
In contrast to the false teachers who failed to know and believe the truth, God has placed a built in ____ ____________ within all of His children to help them know the difference between false teaching and true and because He has, they continue in the truth (vv 20-21).
John goes on to make it clear that "the anointing" we have within us is a TEACHER (2v 7). So why do we have no need that anyone should teach us? According to John, it’s because the one who abides IN YOU (if you're a believer) IS A TEACHER and would you like to take a guess WHO that teacher is? The Holy Spirit.
FYI… The Bible clearly and repeatedly emphasizes the importance of biblical teaching.
So what John seems to have in mind primarily in this passage when he says "you have no need that anyone should teach you" is that the Holy One (Jesus Christ himself) gives His people the Holy Spirit and the HS illuminates truth, exposes error and keeps His people from deception.
In John 16:13 the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Spirit of _________ who will guide you into all ________.
Child of God, John wants you to know that when you turned from your sin and trusted in Jesus Christ and His work on the cross alone to save you, you entered into His family and were indwelled by the HS who will protect you from error and keep you from being deceived.
And because that’s true, John wants us to know that one of the clearest possible indicators someone does not belong to Christ and have eternal life is when he or she embraces _______ __________ and abandons ____ ________ all together.
So how do we know the people John is referring to had embraced false doctrine? The clues are woven in and out of the entire fabric of John’s entire letter and I’ve mentioned in weeks past that some of these errors were at the very heart of what later came to be known as Gnosticism.
The term Gnosticism comes from the Greek word for __________ and was later attributed to those who claimed to possess some sort of _________ form of knowledge that wasn’t available to the common person.
List additional Gnostic beliefs here:
When we read the book of 1 John, we can see that instead of directly calling out and confronting each individual heresy, the author chose to restate some of the foundational and timeless truths of the faith and he’s doing it as he says in v 26 because there are people who were trying to deceive them. They were _______ ___ _______ ________!
By emphasizing the role of the HS as teacher, John wanted his people to know that even though they’re to listen, learn and benefit from gifted teachers within the church, they’ll never be ultimately dependent upon human wisdom or man’s opinion because God has given us the HS (the Spirit of truth) who is an amazing teacher.
In vv 22-23 John wants his readers to know they don’t know God if they haven’t embraced His Son, Jesus Christ. Have you embraced and confessed His Son?
